A middle aged American businessman in personal crisis, striving to redeem himself from family failures, sets out overseas on a dangerous mission. A Refugee In Sudan is a tale of despair, death and redemption, largely set amidst a fictional village in war-torn Southern Sudan in the early 1990s. It is a story of fathers and sons, of family ties broken, of a mid-life in turmoil and of one man's self-endangering mission to save the Dinka people from the merciless, genocidal death riders, the Murahaleen.
"A Refugee In Sudan is a story that was conceived as a result of my horror upon originally reading of the events transpiring in southern Sudan many years ago. My original goal was two fold: to share my creative writing with the public while raising some money for the Valentino Achak Deng Foundation- the non-profit organization founded by famous "lost boy" Deng and writer Dave Eggers to build and sustain a new secondary school for the young residents of Southern Sudan. (Dave Eggers is the author of the- partially fictionalized- biographical novel of Valentino Achak Deng's young life experiences before, during and after the destruction of his home ,and the slaughter of countless villagers, in Marial Bai, Sudan. That novel is What is The What and is highly recommended by this site.) However in posting the entire book online as I do here now, ironically, my goal has now become simply one; to help raise money for this most worthy project."- Jonathan Fine
The Valentino Achak Deng Foundation is a unique charitable organization doing something real, tangible and amazing for the residents of southern Sudan as they work to rebuild their villages from the years of horrific abuse they so recently suffered at the hands of the central government and the mercenary fighters it hired to wipe out countless villagers and their villages. To create and sustain educational opportunities for the young people of this region truly does give them, and us all, reason to be hopeful that better days are ahead for the surviving inhabitants of South Sudan.
